So often when we need a quick energy boost we think of grabbing a caffeinated beverage instead of finding the fuel our bodies truly need. The basic fuel to keep the human body in optimal motion is the food we consume. That food is broken down by macro nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats. All three are needed to maintain an optimal balance of energy; however, carbohydrates will give you the quickest energy boost to get you through whatever activity you are doing. Consuming the right carbohydrates, in the right portion, at the right time, will give the sustained energy your body craves to keep going all day.

Maintaining an even blood sugar level will also help you stay energized and focused all day. When choosing food for energy, look for your best options for sustained energy, not just a quick boost then a sudden drop. Grabbing a sugary snack or simple carbohydrate will spike your glucose levels and give you an energy boost, only to drop below normal, leaving you feeling hungry or like you need a nap a few hours later. Many people feel that drop or tiredness mid-afternoon. If this is the case with you, look at your previous meal. Was it a balance of protein, vegetables, healthy fats, and high fiber carbohydrates or was it pasta or pizza? The first will support balance blood sugar for sustained energy while the latter will spike then drop blood sugar only to leave you feeling tired and lethargic.

Balance out your energy by combining a complex carbohydrate such as berries or whole grains with a lean protein or healthy fat. Combinations may be berries with raw almonds or quinoa with a chicken breast. Not only will you get the energy you need but it will stick with you and keep you satisfied until your next meal.
