The Regenerative Lifestyle

There is a preparation phase for regenerative treatments. Experienced regenerative physicians share a common philosophy which focuses on nutrition, stress management, movement exercises, and functional medicine. Inflammation can be triggered by a poor diet, stress, improper movement patterns, by genetics, by an imbalance of hormones, or by an insufficient digestive response. If these areas of inflammation are addressed first, then the success rate increases significantly. In some cases, regenerative treatments are not even needed once the inflammation is controlled. Managing these lifestyle habits are important to the overall regenerative response.

Non-surgical treatments have been shown to be effective modalities for patients who:

• are restricted from performing common tasks due to stiff joints and pain
• suffer from chronic pain on a daily basis
• are trying to return to a sport quickly following an acute injury
• have recent or past acute injuries and are looking for quick recovery
• have failed to get results from other treatment options offered
• are exploring alternative options to surgery
• want to move better and feel better

Specializing in non-surgical orthopedic and sports medicine, Rejuv Medical treats any new or old injuries, muscle aches and pains, and a variety of muscle, joint, or arthritis-related issues. At Rejuv Medical, our skilled team maintains a high level of personalized care and attention using state-of-the-art technology to care for patients. Rejuv Medical offers each client a comprehensive approach and the access to pro-athlete training and healing resources. Sports medicine uses a non-surgical approach to treat and promote healing of acute or chronic muscle, bone, joint, ligament or tendon injuries. Sports medicine helps patients – from adolescents to older adults – regain loss of function, minimize pain and disability, and incorporate fitness and wellness into their daily lives. A Sports medicine physician has the advanced training and medical expertise to help someone develop the skills needed to address an injury and move forward to a quick recovery.

Stem Cell Regenerative Medicine or Cell Therapy

Stem Cell Regenerative repair is the power-cell behind the regeneration of tissue and uses your body’s own stem cells as a building block in an attempt to mimic other damaged cells located in the joint. Stem cells are pulled gently from the bone marrow of the hip. These mesenchymal stem cells are the purest form of stem cells in your body’s natural reserve. Other physicians may be using stem cells harvested from adipose (fat) tissue, but the response isn’t shown to be as successful. In addition, the process at which stem cells are harvested from adipose tissue is painful and requires the patient to have available fat to harvest from. Dr. Baumgartner was the first Minnesota physician to bring stem cell treatments to the upper Midwest, by partnering with Regenexx® five years ago. Dr. Baumgartner saw the promising effects of what a patient’s own stem cells could do to promote healing and repair and decided to offer this non-invasive procedure. Regenexx® Stem Cell Treatments: Unlike a standard stem cell procedure, Rejuv Medical has learned to take this procedure a step further and has launched a version of advanced stem cell and platelet procedures from Regenexx®. Though these procedures cannot guarantee results for all, there have been many studies done that are proving the results are effective and worthy of practicing. The research is continuing to explode as many leading experts are seeing incredible results with these procedures. Rejuv Medical continues to strive in pioneering the field of Regenerative Medicine. As you can see, there are many success stories that have poured out of this clinic over the past 10-years.

You May Benefit From Orthopedic Stem Cell Therapy If You Have:

  • Avascular Necrosis
  • Bone Loss
  • Cartilage Defects
  • Degenerative Joint Changes,
    Including Osteoarthritis
  • Disc-related Back Pain
  • Meniscus Tears
  • Non-Union Fractures
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Tendonopathies

What Mesenchymal Stem Cells & Where do They Come From?

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells that can be found in bone marrow. Rejuv Medical performs autologous stem cell therapy, which means that the stem cells used in your treatment are taken from your own body, not from a donor. Using your own stem cells for the procedure helps reduce your risk of infection and eliminate the possibility of immune rejection.

In an autologous stem cell procedure, your physician will draw a sample of bone marrow from the iliac crest of your hip. The sample is then filtered and concentrated in a sterile environment, then injected into the area of your body that you are trying to heal. This procedure is done on an outpatient basis while under light sedation and leaves no scarring.

The idea behind orthopedic stem cell therapy is that the injection of these concentrated regenerative cells at an area of your body experiencing degeneration will kick start your body’s ability to heal itself. These injections can be given independent of or in conjunction with an orthopedic surgical procedure

PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments

Prolotherapy sounds the alarm and waits for the body to send the platelets and other growth factors, whereas PRP delivers the platelets and rich growth factors right to the source. Why wait for it, when it can be delivered immediately to start the healing cascade right away? Furthermore, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used for the repair of chronic degenerative joints, ligaments and tendon injuries. This new technology is changing the way doctors and sports physicians treat injury, pain and aging.  Conditions treated include: chronic overuse injuries to the ankles, knee and shoulders; arthritic joints; chronic back and spine arthritis and pain; degenerative disc disease. More specific injuries include; tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee ligament tears, shin splints, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and IT band syndrome can be effectively treated with PRP. PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain huge reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing: bone, tendon and ligament regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels and stimulate the wound healing process resulting in new collagen formation.  PRP is often combined with ultrasound to guide the injections to the specific pathologic tissue or joint.

Platelet Rich Plasma Has Been Helpful In Treating:

  • Tendonitis / Tendonosis
  • Lower Back Pain
  • Chronic Sprains and Strains
  • Osteoarthritis Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Partial Tears
  • Neck Pain
  • Bursitis
  • Whiplash Injuries
  • Plantar Fasciitis

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy, or ligament reconstructive therapy, is a safe, non-surgical treatment for chronic pain, injury and arthritis. Common problems treated with Prolotherapy include joint arthritis, TMJ dysfunction, chronic neck and back pain, shoulder injuries, Fibromyalgia, injuries to the wrists, elbows, knees and ankles, and whiplash-type injuries. Prolotherapy targets the joint, ligaments and tendons that are weakened and stretched out from injury or aging and actually promotes healing and repair. This stimulation of the body’s healing mechanism helps to restore strength and integrity to the damaged area. The procedure involves injecting a solution into the damaged joint, ligament or tendon.  This stimulates the body to begin the healing process by sounding the alarm, which alerts the body to send platelets and other natural growth factors to the area being treated.

Prolotherapy Has Been Helpful In Treating:

  • Arthritis
  • Many forms of back pain
  • Sacroiliac (SI) Joint pain
  • Sternoclavicular Joint Pain
  • Trigger points
  • Chronic muscle pain
  • Baker’s cysts of the knee
  • Unstable Joints

Joint Lubrication

As we age our bodies breakdown. Dehydration and sedentary lifestyles impair the production of joint lubrication. This can lead to a stiff grinding sensation in the joint. A patient may feel discomfort and a lack of mobility. The natural response is inflammation and we change movement patterns to compensate for the stiffness. This compensation changes joint function in other areas of the body then too. If the tissue is not damaged, and if the joint still appears healthy through imaging, then lubricants such as Supartz® or SynviscOne® can be used to increase joint lubrication and decrease friction. This treatment is minimally invasive, and patients tend to feel immediate relief. Supartz® treatments work over time, patients are treated once a month for up to six months and most insurances cover such treatments.

Nerve Therapy & Trigger-Point Injections

When we suffer from past injuries, the body may not heal properly. Nerves may become pinched or restricted by scar tissue, leading to pain and numbness of joints and tissue. Sometimes patients claim they feel sharp or hot bursts of pain rush through their hip or leg. These pains and conditions may be treated with nerve treatments. Regenerative experts at Rejuv Medical can use a simple and gentle injections series to bathe the nerve entirely. This solution turns off negative pain receptors and reprograms normal function to the nerve. In the process reduce restriction in the nerve. Patients who experience nerve therapies have been seen walking into the clinic with a walker and walking out of the clinic on their own power. The results are very noticeable with patients and are covered by most insurance providers.

HOW TO RESTORE YOUR HEALTH AND REBUILD YOUR BODY WITHOUT DRUGS OR SURGERY.

If you have been told you need surgery, or if you feel you must simply live with the pain you are faced with, you have options available to you. With modern day advances in medicine, there are options available for a holistic approach to joint damage repair. For more than 20 years injectable platelet therapy had been used for a wide variety of medical treatments including oral surgery, dentistry and wound care. More recently, its application has extended to sports medicine, cardiovascular surgery, and cosmetic surgery. The safety of injectable platelets and growth factors has been well established in the medical literature. Incomplete tendon healing after an injury is a common source of pain and dysfunction. Tendons may become inflamed (tendonitis), degenerated (tendinopathy) or torn. In addition, arthritis can lead to joint degeneration, swelling and pain. The injection of your own platelets and growth factors into injured tendons and joints has been demonstrated to safely alleviate pain and restore function without the associated risks of drugs or surgery. Rejuv Medical is the industry leader in regenerative medicine, such as Stem Cell Regenerative Treatments, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), Prolotherapy and other non-surgical orthopedic treatments.

Other Orthopedic & Pain Injections

We also offer other injections for pain and arthritic conditions, including:

Nerve Blocks

A nerve block is an anesthetic or anti-inflammatory injection targeted toward a certain nerve or group of nerves with the intent to treat pain. The purpose of the injection is to “turn off” a pain signal coming from a specific location in the body. Imaging guidance using ultrasound technology can be used to help the doctor place a needle in the precise location.  We at Rejuv Medical believe that being precise means that our patients will receive the maximum benefit from the injection. What are some common uses of the procedure? People who suffer from either acute or chronic pain might have a nerve block injection to achieve temporary pain relief. For the most part, this pain originates from the spine. However,  other areas commonly impacted include the neck, buttocks, legs and arms.  Chronic headaches can also be broken with nerve specific block treatments.  Delivering a nerve block injection allows a damaged nerve the time needed to heal itself from a state of constant irritation.  By performing a nerve block treatment and then monitoring how the patient responds to the injection, Rejuv Medical can truly assess the benefit of a nerve block treatment as well as the extent of an injury.

Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point is an irritable, painful, taut muscle band or palpable knot in a muscle that can cause localized pain or referred pain.  Referred pain from trigger points can mimic pinched nerves in the neck or lower back.  They can occur from direct muscle injuries, poor posture, repetitive strain or secondarily from spine conditions such as a herniated disc. What are Trigger point Injections? Trigger point injections are injections of local anesthetic (numbing) medication, saline and/or cortisone. The basis for a trigger point injection is to relax the area of an intense muscle spasm.  By relaxing the muscle spasm, blood flow to the area is improved, thus allowing the washout of irritating metabolites.  Trigger point injections are an important part of treating myofascial pain syndrome and, in some cases, fibromyalgia.

Botox for Migraine Headaches

New studies show that treatment with BOTOX® can reduce the severity of migraine attacks, lead to fewer days using abortive/rescue medications, and reduce episodes of vomiting.  This is achieved through relaxation (using Botox®) of the head and neck muscles that frequently trigger migraine attacks.

Lubricating Join Injections

Hyaluronan (also called hyaluronic acid) is a substance in normal joint fluid that lubricates the joint, much like oil lubricates engine components.  The knee continuously produces its own hyaluronan.  In osteoarthritis, there is a decrease in the amount of hyaluronan in the joint fluid. Also, the hyaluronan molecules break down, becoming less effective at lubricating the joint. How do they work? The injections are thought to work by helping the knee normalize the hyaluronan in the joint fluid.  The injections may  also reduce inflammatory cells in the knee and reduce nerve impulses that cause pain. Hyaluronan injections are very safe.  The chances of a significant adverse reaction (severe knee swelling, hypersensitivity reaction) are about 3 out of a 1000.  This is much lower than the risk associated with gastrointestinal problems with taking anti-inflammatory medications.

Frequently Asked Questions About Regenerative Treatments

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used for the repair of chronic degenerative joints, ligaments and tendon injuries. This new technology is backed by research and is changing the way we treat injury, pain and aging.  Conditions treated include; chronic overuse injuries to the ankles, knee and shoulders; arthritic joints, chronic back and spine arthritis and pain, and degenerative disc disease. In addition, these specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee ligament tears, shin splints, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and IT band syndrome may all be effectively treated using PRP.

What is a musculoskeletal ultrasound?

An ultrasound possesses unique real-time capability permits examination and diagnosis during movement. It also allows for guidance of needles during treatment. The exquisite resolution created by state-of-the-art scanners and high-frequency transducers makes musculoskeletal ultrasound a powerful tool when diagnosing an injury. Rejuv Medical utilizes the ultrasound tool without the need for x-ray exposure or MRI. If needed, we also use it for needle guidance to treat injured tissue or joints during a procedure.

What is Prolotherapy?

Prolotherapy, or ligament reconstructive therapy, is a safe,non-surgical treatment for chronic pain, injury and arthritis. Common problems treated with Prolotherapy include joint arthritis, TMJ dysfunction, chronic neck and back pain, shoulder injuries, Fibromyalgia, injuries to the wrists, elbows, knees and ankles, and whiplash-type motor vehicle accident injuries. Prolotherapy targets the joint, ligaments and tendons that are weakened and stretched out from injury or aging. This stimulation of the body’s healing mechanism helps to restore strength and integrity to the damaged area.  The procedure involves injecting a solution into the damaged joint, ligament or tendon.  This stimulates the body and starts the healing process.  With Prolotherapy, the pain is NOT covered up. The injury and source of the pain is healed.
