Hypothyroidism: A medical diagnosis often missed...

Do you fall into the recent statistic showing that 30 million women and 15 million men are suffering from an underdiagnosed medical condition that is making them tired, sick and overweight?

Do you have any of the following symptoms?

Tired

Difficulty losing weight

Sluggish in the morning

High Cholesterol

Dry skin

Fluid retention

Memory and focus trouble

Decreased sex drive

Cold hands and feet

Thinning hair

Hoarse voice

Thicker fingernails
Chronic aches and pains

Muscle Cramps and weakness

Many people think this is just a normal part of the aging process and just live with it.    They struggle to find health and feel trapped in their aging body.

The above symptoms constitute a medical diagnosis called Hypothyroidism.  45 million people go undiagnosed and suffer living with the consequences of not being diagnosed.

Hypothyroid:

The thyroid is a small gland in the front of your throat.  It creates a hormone called thyroid hormone whose job is to regulate our metabolism.   Every organ system in our body is controlled by this hormone and if deficient they will slow down and not function properly.   Your skin, heart, brain, gut and muscles are all affected.  The thyroid hormone has the ability to turn on the cells that keep us up and running.   If treated appropriately it can have a profound effect on our quality of life!

If it is so underdiagnosed, why is that?

The problem is the diagnosis is not cut and dry and there can be people suffering with subclinical disease with symptoms like trouble losing weight, constipation and mild depression just to say a few.   The blood test that tests for the condition is the TSH.   Many labs and physicians use a cutoff point of anything over 5.0 go be a red flag for the disease.  There are two BIG problems with using just the 5.0 number as the diagnostic criteria.  First, many physicians are not taking into account the physical exam and history given by the patient.  The patient may have many of the symptoms of the condition, but their TSH may not be over 5.0.  So, they are not given any treatment yet they do have a thyroid hormone deficiency.  Second, there is much current research that concludes the TSH should be below 2.0 for a patient to have optimal health and decreased risk of chronic disease.  This is a very important point.  In medicine we need to be up to date and cutting edge.  We can’t treat patients without looking into what our current research is telling us to do.   You, as the consumer of medicine, have a choice in how you are treated.  Be educated in your own health and get evidence based treatment that leads to wellness, health and disease prevention.

The thyroid hormone is just the tip of the ice berg in balancing the endocrine function in our bodies.   Imagine a table with four legs.  Each leg represents a hormone system in our body.  If one leg is out of balance, the entire table is unstable.  It is the same way in our body.  Each system is dependent on the other for true balance and optimal function.   This hormonal balance can be altered through stress, the aging process, injury, unhealthy nutrition habits and too much adipose (fat) tissue.   The big legs on the table are:

1.  Thyroid hormone

2.  The Sex hormones (Testosterone (Big T), Progesterone, Estrogen and DHEA)

3.  The Adrenal hormones (Cortisol and DHEA)

4.   The rest of the Story (nutrition, exercise, sleep, relaxation, Vitamin D, B12…)

We don’t have to live tired and fatigued with a loss of our previous vigor and gusto.  Our bodies don’t have to loose muscle mass and sexiness.  Our mind doesn’t need to lose its productivity and sharpness.  Our mood doesn’t need to be flat and without drive and hope.   There is promise and possibility for a life full of excitement and enthusiasm.

Balance of these vital systems leads to a state of homeostasis (balance) in the body which will lead to a decrease in chronic disease and a longer life lived with passion and zest.  Take control of your health by balancing your hormone systems, exercising regularly, eating nutrition rich foods and setting a goal to live in a healthy, strong body for a long, long time.
