Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections are used for the repair of chronic degenerative joints, ligaments and tendon injuries. This new technology has good literature support and is changing the way we treat injury, pain and aging.  Conditions treated include: chronic overuse injuries to the ankles, knee and shoulders; arthritic joints; chronic back and spine arthritis and pain; degenerative disc disease, and more specific injuries including tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee ligament tears, shin splints, partial thickness rotator cuff tears, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis and IT band syndrome may all be effectively treated with PRP.  The pain is not just covered up.  The injury is stimulated to heal and repair.

PRP is blood plasma with concentrated platelets.  The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain huge reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing: bone, tendon and ligament regeneration and repair, promote development of new blood vessels and stimulate the wound healing process resulting in new collagen formation.  PRP is often combined with ultrasound to guide the injections to the specific pathologic tissue or joint. For more information regarding Prolotherapy and PRP.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy, or ligament reconstructive therapy, is a safe,
non-surgical treatment for chronic pain, injury and arthritis.
Common problems treated with Prolotherapy include joint arthritis, TMJ dysfunction, chronic neck and back pain, shoulder injuries, Fibromyalgia, injuries to the wrists, elbows, knees and ankles, and whiplash-type motor vehicle accident injuries.

Prolotherapy targets the joint, ligaments and tendons that are weakened and stretched out from injury or aging and actually promotes healing and repair.  This stimulation of the body’s healing mechanism helps to restore strength and integrity to the damaged area.  The procedure involves injecting a solution into the damaged joint, ligament or tendon.  This stimulates the body to begin the healing process to restore strength and function.  With Prolotherapy, the pain is NOT just covered up. The injury and source of the pain is healed.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound’s unique real-time capability permits examination and diagnosis during movement, and allows for guidance of needles during treatment. The exquisite resolution created by state-of-the-art scanners and high-frequency transducers makes musculoskeletal ultrasound a powerful tool in the diagnosis of injury and pain in soft tissue and joints. It is done at Rejuv Medical without the need for x-ray exposure or MRI. If needed, we can also use it for needle guidance to the injured tissue or joint during a procedure. This allows for increased accuaracy during treatments.

It has changed the way we “see”and treat injury and aging. One more way we can "Rejuvinate from the indside out."

Other Orthopedic & Pain InjectionsWe also offer other injections for pain and arthritic conditions including:

NERVE BLOCKS

What Is a Nerve Block?A nerve block is an anesthetic or anti-inflammatory injection targeted toward a certain nerve or group of nerves to treat pain. The purpose of the injection is to "turn off" a pain signal coming from a specific location in the body or to decrease inflammation in that area. Imaging guidance using ultrasound technology may be used to help the doctor place the needle in the precise location so that the patient can receive maximum benefit from the injection.
What are some common uses of the procedure?People who suffer from either acute or chronic pain might have a nerve block injection to achieve temporary pain relief.  Often such pain originates from the spine, but other areas commonly affected include the neck, buttocks, legs and arms.  Chronic headaches can also be broken with specific blocks.  Delivering a nerve block injection allows a damaged nerve time to heal itself from a state of constant irritation.  By performing a nerve block and then monitoring how the patient responds to the injection, the doctor can often use this information to help determine the cause or source of the pain.

TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

What is a Trigger Point?A trigger point is an irritable, painful, taut muscle band or palpable knot in a muscle that can cause localized pain or referred pain.  Referred pain from trigger points can mimic pinched nerves in the neck or low back.  They can occur from direct muscle injuries, poor posture, repetitive strain or secondarily from spine conditions such as a herniated disc.
What are Trigger Point Injections? Trigger point injections are injections of local anesthetic (numbing) medication, saline and/or cortisone into the trigger point(s).  The basis for a trigger point injection is to relax the area of intense muscle spasm.  By relaxing the muscle spasm, blood flow to the area is improved, thus allowing the washout of irritating metabolites.  Trigger point injections are an important part of treating myofascial pain syndrome and, in some cases, fibromyalgia.  Many times multiple injections are performed in a series.

BOTOX® FOR MIGRAINE HEADACHES

What do the studies show?New studies of patients suffering with migraine headaches show that treatment with BOTOX® can reduced severity of migraine attacks, lead to fewer days using abortive/rescue medications and fewer episodes of vomiting with severe headaches.  This is achieved through relaxation of the head and neck muscles that frequently trigger migraine attacks.

LUBRICATING JOINT INJECTIONS

What is injected?Hyaluronan (also called hyaluronic acid) is a substance in normal joint fluid that lubricates the joint, much like oil lubricates engine components.  The knee continuously produces its own hyaluronan.  In osteoarthritis, there is a decrease in the amount of hyaluronan in the joint fluid. Also, the hyaluronan molecules break down, becoming less effective at lubricating the joint.
How do they work? The injections are thought to work by helping the kneenormalize the hyaluronan in the joint fluid.  The injectionsalso may reduce inflammatory cells in the knee and reduce nerve impulses that cause pain. Hyaluronan injections arevery safe.  The chances of a significant adverse reaction(severe knee swelling, hypersensitivity reaction) are about3 in 1000 based on the results of twenty research studies.  This is much lower than the risk of gastrointestinal problemswith taking
anti-inflammatory medications.

CORTISONE INJECTIONS

What is cortisone?
Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. When pain is decreased from cortisone it is because theinflammation is diminished.  By injecting the cortisone into aparticular area of inflammation, very high concentrations ofthe medication can be given while keeping potential side-effects to a minimum. Cortisone injections usually workwithin a few days, and the effects can last up to several weeks.

What are some common reasons for a cortisone injection?
Many conditions where inflammation is an underlying problem are amenable to cortisone shots.  These include, but are certainly not limited to Shoulder Bursitis, Arthritis, Trigger Finger, Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, SI Joint Dysfunction and radiating pain from Low Back Disc Disease.
