Nerve Treatments

Chronic pain issues, whether it’s headache, chronic neck pain and especially chronic back pain, is not always coming from those deeper sources like the spine but can be coming from more superficial sources like your nerves. We’re finding that a lot of recent studies that there’s a concept called neurogenic inflammation or neuropathic pain. In the past we treat that with like anti-seizure medications like Gabapentin or Neurontin or eventually the person has been in chronic medication because they can’t get to the source of the pain. They tried nerve blocks. They’ve had their back viewed. They’ve had surgery but are still having problems. It’s a lot simpler than you think it is. At Rejuv Medical we can go to the source of this pain which is often the nerves and get them blocked and treated appropriately to stop the source of that pain to kind of break that cycle of pain and get the body healing and stronger back on its own.

Trigger Point Injections

A trigger point is an irritable, painful, taut muscle band or palpable knot in a muscle that can cause localized pain or referred pain. Referred pain from trigger points can mimic pinched nerves in the neck or low back. They can occur from direct muscle injuries, poor posture, repetitive strain or secondarily from spine conditions such as a herniated disc.
What are Trigger Point Injections? Trigger point injections are injections of local anesthetic (numbing) medication, saline and/or cortisone. The basis for a trigger point injection is to relax the area of intense muscle spasm. By relaxing the muscle spasm, blood flow to the area is improved, thus allowing the washout of irritating metabolites. Trigger point injections are an important part of treating myofascial pain syndrome and, in some cases, fibromyalgia. Many times multiple injections are performed in a series.

Trigger points are very easy to treat. A trigger point injection is basically injecting a substance down to that stub of muscle that electrically gets that muscle to relax, the electrical impulses, relax the tension to that muscle, bringing back normal function to that joint and balance and help the problem.

Lubricating Joint Injections

Hyaluronan (also called hyaluronic acid) is a substance in normal joint fluid that lubricates the joint, much like oil lubricates engine components. The knee continuously produces its own hyaluronan. In osteoarthritis, there is a decrease in the amount of hyaluronan in the joint fluid. Also, the hyaluronan molecules break down, becoming less effective at lubricating the joint.

How do they work? The injections are thought to work by helping the knee normalize the hyaluronan in the joint fluid. The injection also may reduce inflammatory cells in the knee and reduce nerve impulses that cause pain. Hyaluronan injections are safe. The chances of a significant adverse reaction (severe knee swelling, hypersensitivity reaction) are 3 out of a 1000. This is much lower than the risk of gastrointestinal problems with taking
anti-inflammatory medications.

Nerve Blocks

What Is a Nerve Block? A nerve block is an anesthetic or anti-inflammatory injection targeted toward a certain nerve or group of nerves to treat pain. The purpose of the injection is to “turn off” a pain signal coming from a specific location in the body. Imaging guidance using ultrasound technology may be used to help the doctor place the needle in the precise location. After all, we want our patients to receive the maximum benefit from these injections.

What are some common uses of the procedure? People who suffer from either acute or chronic pain might have a nerve block injection to achieve temporary pain relief. Often such pain originates from the spine. However, other areas commonly often impacted include the neck, buttocks, legs and the arms. Chronic headaches can also be broken with specific nerve blocks. Delivering a nerve block injection allows a damaged nerve the time it needs to heal from a state of constant irritation.

Botox® For Migraine Headaches

New studies show that treatment with BOTOX® can reduced severity of migraine attacks, lead to fewer days using abortive/rescue medications, and produce fewer episodes of vomiting. This is achieved through the relaxation of the head and neck muscles that frequently trigger migraine attacks.

You get some people to get those lights down. You ever had a migraine headache? Bright lights kill you. All those sounds kill you. Migraine headaches are very, very difficult to deal with but there are treatments that are helpful. We have a lot of different treatments for migraine headaches. One of the treatments that are very effective is Botox migraines. People are always a little bit scared about Botox but actually chronic pain is how Botox was developed in the first place, not for aesthetics. Aesthetics came secondary to the benefits they got from the chronic pain treatments. So, migraine treatment is treated with Botox by decreasing the muscle spasms, often putting pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that feed the head to get those muscles to relax enough to decrease that tension.

Cortisone Injections

What is cortisone? Cortisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory medication. Cortisone decreases pain because it reduces inflammation.By injecting the cortisone into a particular area, very high concentrations of the medication can be given while keeping potential side-effects to a minimum. Cortisone injections usually work within a few days.

What are some common reasons one might require a cortisone injection? Many conditions where inflammation is an underlying problem are amenable to cortisone shots. These include, but are certainly not limited to; Shoulder Bursitis, Arthritis, Trigger Finger, Tennis Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, SI Joint Dysfunction and radiating pain from Low Back Disc Disease.

Here at Rejuv Medical, we tend to avoid using cortisone, the long term affects can be damaging to the joint and tissues.
